(Who We Are)
Mission
The mission of the San Antonio Food Bank is to acquire and distribute at the lowest possible cost adequate and nutritious food and related products to charitable organizations that provide for needy individuals and families

Supports nonprofit food pantries and on-site feeding facilities in the community through the distribution of donated and purchased food and grocery products; provides information and referral services to individuals or agencies; and provides USDA commodities. Services client agencies in the city of San Antonio, Bexar County, and 19 other counties in South Texas.

(What We Do)
 Programs
In collaboration with 380 partner agencies, we distribute food to more than 40,000 families every month through the following programs:

 Warehouse Distribution

The warehouse distribution program is our largest food assistance program with the exception of USDA commodities.  This program includes all food and other grocery products that flow through the warehouse.  Food drive, purchased food and product donations are accounted for in this program.  A shared maintenance fee of 15 cents per pound is charged to the client agencies, which is used to offset warehouse, utility, equipment repair, personnel costs, etc.  No handling fee is charged for fresh produce and baked goods.

 Second Servings

The Second Servings Program provides food directly to on-site feeding facilities within the hour of pickup from donors. Unlike warehouse distribution the food is free to the on-site feeding facility.  This year, Second Servings is projected to deliver over one million pounds of food to various facilities.  Primary donors include restaurants, caterers, private clubs, coffee shops and cafeterias.

 Kids Cafe
A Kids Cafe confronts childhood hunger by serving as a direct feeding partnership between an area food bank and an after-school program.  Kids Cafes are safe, nurturing places where neighborhood children can go after school and receive a hot supper as well as help with homework from caring volunteers or staff members.

  Fresh Produce Program
The Fresh Produce Program (FPP) formerly known as the Volunteer Gleaning Program has operated as the produce recovery division of the San Antonio Food Bank since 1997.  The FPP annually salvages and distributes between two to three million pounds of fresh and nutritious produce throughout the SAFB’s 16-county service area.

Summer Food Service Program

With summer vacation in full swing, school cafeterias will be closing their doors – and thousands of at-risk children who depend on federally subsidized school lunches will scramble to make alternative arrangements to replace those meals. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides nutritious meals and snacks to low-income children during the summer
 months when school is out.

Project HOPE
The Healthy Options Program for the Elderly, or HOPE, provides senior citizens living on a fixed income with supplemental staple groceries on a monthly basis. These groceries help fight hunger and malnutrition for our elderly neighbors.
